Orosei

A jewel nestled among ancient sanctuaries and breathtaking landscapes, where traditions and nature blend in timeless beauty

“The sun penetrated fiercely into the large square; with its pale, heavy facade at the top of the stone slope on one side, and the arches and a large, dark courtyard and the external stairs of some unknown building, far away on the other side, with the road entering from the hinterland and plunging down towards the brackish marshes, and with the sensation that once a single power had held this place in its grasp, had given this center its architectural unity and a splendor now lost and forgotten, Orosei was truly fascinating.”

By Car

From Olbia, Sassari, or Cagliari, take the SS131DCN towards Nuoro, then take the exit for Lula-Bitti-Dorgali-Galtellì-Oliena and follow the signs for Galtellì-Orosei. You can also reach Orosei by taking the SS 125, Eastern Sardinian.

Located in the center of the Gulf of the same name along the eastern coast of Sardinia, Orosei is distinguished by its enchanting white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters that caress its coastline. However, the charm of this town is not limited to natural wonders: Orosei offers a rich cultural heritage rooted in history.
A stroll through its historic center reveals a vivid and tangible story, narrated through its characteristic architectural structures. The heart of the town proudly preserves a well-maintained historic center, where buildings and architectures reflect the diverse historical epochs that have shaped the town over time.

A visit to the main squares serves as a focal point for an interesting cultural experience:
Piazza del Popolo: Surrounded by buildings that tell ancient and recent stories, this square is where social life manifests itself in all its fervor, with cafes, shops, and chance encounters that animate daily life.
Piazza Sas Animas: Radiating a more intimate atmosphere, this square reveals history through its evocative corners and small architectural gems. The square becomes a space where one immerses oneself in the past, in a fascinating blend of tradition and authenticity.
Piazza Sant’Antonio: Adding a touch of spirituality to the historical journey, this square features sacred buildings that underscore the importance of faith in the life of the community.

Just outside the historic center, a visit to two important rural churches is recommended, playing a central role in significant devotion rituals that have been passed down for centuries with unwavering faith: the Church of S. Maria de Mare (Saint Mary of the sea) and the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rimedio (Saint Mary of the Remedy).

The Church of Santa Maria de Mare is a small historical and architectural gem. Built during the Pisan era, this church traces its roots to ancient Nuragic settlements, incorporating reused stone materials that bear witness to the continuity of human occupation in this place over the centuries.
The structure of the small church reflects the architectural style of its construction period, with simple and sober lines that harmoniously integrate with the surrounding environment. The interior of the church, adorned with numerous ex-votos shaped like small and colorful boats, offers visitors a unique experience.
One of the most significant events associated with this church is the Feast of Santa Maria 'e Mare, celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May. During this festival, the church becomes the focal point of an evocative maritime procession. The statue of the Madonna, beautifully adorned with flowers and jewels, is transported on a decorated boat, followed by a procession of festively adorned vessels. This procession crosses the waters of the Cedrino River in an atmosphere of devotion and joy, culminating with the arrival of the statue at the Church of Santa Maria sul Mare.

Another must-visit for those wishing to explore the cultural richness of Orosei is the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rimedio. Built during the seventeenth century, it was expanded and modified in the late nineteenth century. The sanctuary, surrounded by numerous lozas, serves as a place of prayer and community life, especially during the two novenas held every year during the festival dedicated to the Holy Madonna in September.

Visiting this picturesque town is not just a stroll through the present but an authentic immersion into the past of Orosei. Every stone and every corner tells a unique story, offering visitors the opportunity to connect with the cultural richness of this captivating Sardinian destination.
